James K. Tonrey, Jr.
James K. Tonrey, Jr. believes in restoring the highly regarded philosophy of the traditional family investment counseling office and offering this valuable service to individuals and families not in a position to establish their own. Jim applies his 40 years of investment management experience in translating industry information and market data to an individual’s unique financial situation with care and prudence. He leads the Dakota Wealth Twin Cities office, focusing on client relationships, risk management, and portfolio management.
Jim founded Stillwater Investment Management, LLC in 2004, successfully growing the firm to approximately $600 million in assets under management. He served as the firm’s Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer. Dakota Wealth acquired Stillwater Investment Management in 2023.
Prior to establishing Stillwater Investment Management, Jim served as a Portfolio Manager with Windsor Financial Group. He was responsible for managing investment portfolios and client relationships for over 60 high net worth families, their trusts and corporations, representing over $100 million of assets under management. In addition, Jim served as a Director and Senior Vice President with Boston Research and Management, Inc., a registered investment advisory firm located in Manchester, Massachusetts.
Jim is a member of the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute and the Twin Cities Society of Securities Analysts. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
A former professional soccer player and Division 1 assistant soccer coach, Jim enjoys soccer, golf, and hanging out at ocean’s edge on the beach. Jim is married to his wife, Dana, and is father to daughter, Grace, and son, Jack.
